Q: What are some ways to increase horsepower in a Mustang?
I recently purchased the new 2011 5.0 Mustang which Motor Trend dynoed and got around 435hp. Im curious as to what I would need to do to get the Mustang up to 500hp and how much it would cost.Im not a mechanic nor am I too familiar with the engine components so keeping it in simple terms would be greatly appreciated-of course along with your feed back. Thanks.
A: Well there aren’t many parts out for the 5.0 yet, but I would suggest a cold air intake, new throttle body, tuner, headers, and Borla cat back exhaust. Since you want it in simple terms, I’ll describe what each part does and about how much power it would give you. FYI the 5.0 gets 412 bhp, plus there is a difference between base horsepower and rear wheel horsepower. You get up to 20% less rwhp than bhp because of power loss through the drivetrain, so getting to 500 true horses in that car will be tougher. I doubt most of these parts are out yet too.
Cold Air Intake- exactly what it sounds like. I’m not familiar with the 5.0 engine, but I think the airbox is on the right side as you open the hood. It’s a big black box close to the headlight. Basically the cold air intake takes this box out and just replaces it with an air filter. A BIG air filter depending on what you get. I would suggest the k&n. I have one and it makes about 15-20 rwhp with premium. Btw you better be running that car on premium.
Throttle body- This is the thing the air intake leads into that connects to the cruise control cable and etc. An aftermarket one is wider, allowing more air into the engine. This should give you about 10-20 rwhp. Add a throttle body spacer and it can get another 3-4 rwhp by spinning the air as it goes into the engine.
Tuner- reprograms the computer and removes all factory limiters. Automatic transmissions get about 35 rwhp from this, and manuals should get about 25-30. Plus you’ll be able to go above 149 mph and rev higher, not that you should go above redline for very long. This also increases the power from your other modifications.
Exhaust headers- these connect the engine to the exhaust system. Using aftermarket headers will increase the amount of airflow and decrease backpressure, raising rwhp by about 15.
Borla Cat Back Exhaust- Sounds and looks sexy, REALLY sexy. It might be wider, but even if it isn’t it’ll still push air better and decrease backpressure, especially through the mufflers. This should get you another 10-15 rwhp, plus a great sound.
Minimum horsepower gains should be around 78rwhp with good tuning, maximum could be up to 100 rwhp, if all the parts give the advertised amount of horsepower.
Enjoy your 5.0, you’ve officially made me jealous lol
Q: How can I make a vintage mustang a beast?
I’m looking into buying a pre-1970-’s ford mustang. I like speed and power, so my question is what are the things I can do to a car like this that will make it into a furious beast. I’m looking for everything and anything. Also what year is the best for something like this? I like the 60’s styles the best. Would a fastback be better? Thanks!
A: Any Mustang is a beast as long as it has a V8 under the hood. Fastback’s are rarest of the 3 body styles available, so be prepared to pay big $$$ for one. If money is tight get yourself a coupe with a big block 390 V8, that would be the most affordable. Your better off to start with what you want instead of fixing up a lesser model, which would cost you more in the long run.
Q: What is the best set of tires for a 2003 ford mustang?
What is the best set of road tires for a 2003 ford Mustang V6 stick shift. I know How slick mustangs can be.
By the way the rims are stock and I live in Virginia. So I’ll be going over some rough roads and swerving to miss crappy drivers.
A: first off dont go to tire rack. yes tires are cheap but getting a shop to put them on for a cheap price is hard. in the end you’d be saving money buying tires from discount tire. plus you get extended warranties and other free services through discount. anyways, i suggest the khumo ecsta asx. it is on the cheaper side but for the price its a bargain. since you live in virginia and i’m sure it snows quite often and you’ll need a tire with some all weather traction. the asx is made with many more sipes than most tires and offers greater wet and icy weather traction thus improving handling and braking. another tire i’d look at that is a bit more pricey but again worth the money is the yokohama yk520. its basically like the khumo but it handles better and last longer. i’m sure when you walk in the door to discount thats one of the first tires they’ll recommend for you
Q: What is the best place to buy 2007 mustang accessories such as hood scoops?
I bought a 2007 mustang a few months ago. Now I’m looking to add stuff to it. I’m thinking about an exhuast tip, pedals, and a hood scoop, maybe a few interior upgrades as well. Actually I’ve thought about a chrome fuel door and side scoops too, but that will come later. Where is the best place to buy all this stuff? Is it better to go back to the dealer or to buy it all myself?
Any advice will help! I’m no expert on cars by the way so it may be hard for me to install some of this stuff.
Thanks!!

Q: What is the difference between a 2011 Ford Mustang V6 and a V6 Premium?
The 2011 Ford Mustang comes in two V6 models, the V6 and the V6 premium. The V6 starts at 22k and the V6 premium starts at 26k. I was wondering where that extra 4000 dollars goes? I don’t see many differences, except the gauge cluster with illumination and the 17 inch wheels. Does the V6 have a similar gauge with illumination? Basically I’m asking is it worth the extra $4,000? If so, why?

Q: How much does it cost to paint a mustang a new color?
I have an 01 Mustang that is red and I want to paint it either pink or black. Does anyone know how much that would cost?
A: It really does depend on what type of paint job you want. A top quality professional job may cost several thousand. Whereas a cheap job by cost around 400. If you are changing the color of the car, then it will cost a little bit more for because they will have to spray the door jams, inside the trunk, under the hood, etc to match the new and old paint. Also dependent on the condition of the car, if there is rust or dents, etc. you may be looking at more of an expense for body work as well. .
Q: What is the top speed of a 1997 mustang coupe?
What is the top speed of a 1997 mustang coupe? Also does the speedometer go up to?
A: 105…
Q: Okay to use different gas on a 1999 Mustang once in while?
I use unleaded all the time in my V6 1999 Mustang. I was wondering if it is okay to use 88 gas, octane every now and then so it lasts longer?
A: Yes as long as its unleaded.
Q: How many miles will an average 1989 for mustang engine last for?
Im planning on buying a 1989 ford mustang gt but it already has 155,000 miles on it and im wondering if it is worth buying or not. everything is in pretty good shape, the car runs well, it has a clean title and is for sale for 2300 dollars. so im wondering if it is a good deal and for how much longer would the car last?
A: Well, I’m assuming for that price, it’s a 5.0, and yes, there were only two engines available in that year, the 2.3 and the 5.0. The 326 is a 60’s vintage Pontiac, and the 351 hasn’t been available in the Mustang since 1973 (except the 1995 Cobra R).
Now, on to the ‘89. It all depends on how much it has been taken care of. The problem with these cars is that ALOT of them have had the $*%& run out of them. Adding to that, they are cheap enough these days that younger buyers are more and more easily able to buy them. If you know the history, or can tell it’s been maintained, I’d say buy it. If it’s been maintained, it’ll last forever. I have a ‘92 that has 168K and it still runs like new. That’s not to say that you won’t have to work on it a little, but the engine will last forever if taken care of. I have read stories in the Mustang magazines about readers getting 550K+ out of them. Although I’ll admit this is extremely rare, 250K is not and they are cheap to rebuild when that time comes. Trust me, clean fox body ‘Stangs are getting harder and harder to find. If it’s a 2.3, I have a friend with a Ranger with 316K on it, and still going. I had an ‘86 with 180K., and it still ran good, but did make a little noise. However, I was pretty young, and probably was guilty for that, not the motor.
Q: How to remove the trunk floor of a 72 mustang?
How do I remove the trunk floor of my 72 mustang? It has a bunch of surface rust and it’s all wet (from a leak) and I’m planning on using POR 15 to get rid of it. What I didn’t know was that I have to take the trunk floor out to work on it. How do I do this? Thanks.
A: good product and directions here;.
Q: Where to go to rent a mustang for the weekend in Ontario?
I’m looking to rent a mustang for a birthday weekend, but it seems like all I can find are economy cars.
Does anyone know of a car rental company that rents out Mustangs in Ontario? I’d prefer around Niagara Falls/ St. Catharines, but it might be worth the drive to go to Toronto.
If you can provide a link as well, that’d be great!
A: Try Hertz. (By the way they are starting to rent the new Shelby Mustangs in some locations)
Q: How can I add more hp to my 92 mustang hatchback that already has a intercepter?
I have a 92 mustang and for some reason when i push down the accelerator it takes off ok but once i hit like 40 mph then it accelerates faster. How can i get it to take off as soon as I hit the gas
A: From your description, I’d say a rear end gear change is in order. Something around 3.90:1 should do the trick.
Q: How long should a V6 2004 mustang engine last?
I’m looking at an 04 mustang with 86K miles on it, well maintained by the records, how long do the V6’s from these mustangs typically last? It’s for $4800.00, seems like a decent deal its in great condition. If I was to buy it I’d like to get to 150K though.
How long should it last assuming that it has been well maintained, average driving conditions.
A: it should last 150k get a carfax run on it also talk them down to say 3500 or 4k if not walk also have a good ford dealer do a pre buy inspection done on it before you buy it.gl2u
Q: Why does my Mustang sound so cranky when I turn the wheels?
I have a ‘94 Mustang w/ 173K on it. It is not the same sound as when power steering fluid is low. I know I have a power steering leak but the noise that is made when turning the wheels, even just slightly, is almost deafening. It sounds more mechanical and may have something to do with the suspension? I noticed it last summer too when it got warm out, went away for the winter, now it is back and seems to keep getting worse. Any ideas?
A: mine made a noise before when i put regular oil instead of synthetic. the first time i changed it i didnt know what it was running
Q: What are the disadvantages and advantages of a soft top Mustang GT over a hard top Mustang GT?
Im about to buy a Mustang GT but im having a hard time choosing between a hard and a soft top mustang. Ive never had a convertible car so i actually like the idea but I dont know the advantages and disadvantages of having a soft top mustang 96-99 GT.
A: If you buy a soft top, get used to the idea that nothing is safe in it. The top can be slashed and the entire interior and everything in it taken. Not to mention the roll over risk. The tops do not last for ever and need replacing more often then one would think.
Now a soft top is nice for leisurely drives, but at sustained highway speeds you will suffer wind burn, sun burn and dehydration. So carry plenty of water, and sun lotion.
On the plus side, they have better resale value, and a lower center of gravity (but they weigh in more due to additional frame parts).
The hard top will give you protection, and while it is possible for the car to be broken into, it is not as easy. At speed it is quieter and the chassis more stable.
